“For Suzanne Gracie. Donated with love from BJJ family everywhere.” Our mom passed away in December of 2021 when she was struck with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. When we shared this with the jiu-jitsu community there was an outpouring of support from all over the world. Even though she wasn’t in the octagon fighting for the Gracie name or on the mats teaching the family art, her contributions behind the scenes were instrumental in helping jiu-jitsu take root in America before it’s inevitable spread to the rest of the world. Besides spending time with her grandkids, in her later years her favorite activity was to take long sunset walks on the Esplanade, a beach front walking path, overlooking Redondo Beach. Thanks to the donations from so many of you, we were able to commission the city of Redondo beach to make, not one, but two concrete benches located at her favorite spot, on her favorite walking path, overlooking her favorite beach.
