After splitting two rounds in a series of hard-fought scrambles for position, Islam Makhachev surged ahead of Chris Wade in the final round and sealed a decision.
Unanimous scores of 29-28 reflected Makhachev’s (13-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) success in winning dominant positions and holding back the wrestling-based counters of Wade (11-3 MMA, 4-2 UFC).
The lightweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 94 event at State Farm Arena in Hidalgo, Texas. It aired on FS1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
After taking a few hard leg kicks, Makhachev pressed for a takedown and found himself caught in a front headlock. When Wade eventually gave up on the position, Makhachev advanced and took mount, but he wound up on bottom after missing an armbar. Undeterred, he set up a triangle that would have been sunk were it not for Wade’s patience under pressure.
Looking to rebound in the second, Wade tried to stand and strike, but wound up running into a single leg. A guillotine choke let Wade slow down the action until Makhachev reversed position and wound up on top. Despite Wade’s repeated attempts to escape the bottom, Makhachev held his position.
Makhachev was visibly fresher headed into the third and had little trouble pushing Wade to the fence before executing a takedown. Wade countered brilliantly with a kimura and reversed to briefly take mount. But again, he banked too hard on a guillotine choke and gave up position, allowing Makhachev to advance to mount and then back control. There, Wade floundered as Makhachev locked in a body triangle and refused escape attempts.
Wade now has lost back-to-back fights, both against Sambo-trained fighters from Dagestan; a decision loss to Rustam Khabilov at UFC Fight Night 87 marked his previous appearance. Makhachev bounces back after a first-round knockout loss to Adriano Martins this past October at UFC 192.
