The flyweight title fight between champion Brandon Moreno and rival Alexandre Pantoja is the main attraction of the UFC 290 co-main event.
These two first got into a fight in 2016 during "The Ultimate Fighter's" 24th season.
Pantoja's experience edge shone through in the second round when he changed gears and ended the fight by submission, even though neither was close to his final form at that point in his career.
Two years later, at UFC Fight Night 129 in 2018, they had their second encounter.
Pantoja was still able to win rounds fairly clearly through hard leg kicks and counters that helped punish his Mexican opponent's resets, despite Moreno hanging tough and sounding the final bell.
However, that fight took place more than ten years ago, and since then, each fighter— especially Moreno— has made significant strides.
As many are aware, Moreno briefly left the UFC as a result of the organization's self-induced flyweight purge following his most recent loss to Pantoja.
However, Moreno finally began to string together his skills when he did return to the company for his second stint.
Moreno has really figured out how to use his patent left hook, as evidenced by the sharper countering presence on his feet.
Moreno's composure in firefights has been a sign of his maturity, whether he is deflecting an attack or fending off intense heat in the pocket. Moreno's lead-side savvy extends all the way down to the kicking department, as evidenced by his rematch with Kai Kara-France.
Moreno has done a much better job of balancing his offensive jiu-jitsu with wrestling when it comes to grappling.
Moreno can now start his own ground attacks and scrambles without having to rely as much on opportunism because he is not afraid to mix in level-shifting shots.
Having said that, given their history, I'm not sure how much Moreno will want to wrestle Pantoja.
There is obviously no question who won the exchanges, despite the fact that the grappling incidents in their series have been relatively brief.
Pantoja is a seasoned Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt who has competed in wrestling matches with everyone from Henry Cejudo to the American Top Team. He is an excellent scrambler and rarely gives up bad positions for very long.
And when Pantoja finds himself in better locations, he has some of the best ground-and-pound available right now.
Pantoja is an absolute marauding lunatic when it comes to his striking on the feet.
Pantoja is a well-known amateur muay Thai stylist who seamlessly transitions through striking ranges and phases, despite the fact that he falls short in the defense department.
Pantoja's offense leaves little room for cover, from combination countering to brutal clinch knees to the body.
